Your First Visit

What to expect at Cura

We know that visiting a new specialist can feel uncertain. Here's exactly what your first visit looks like.

Before your appointment

Gather your medical history, a list of current medications, and any prior wound care records or photos. If you have insurance, have your card ready. Wear loose, comfortable clothing that provides easy access to the wound area.

Your assessment

Your clinician will take a full medical history, examine your wound carefully — measuring dimensions, assessing depth, tissue type, drainage, and surrounding skin — and discuss your treatment goals with you.

Your care plan

Based on your assessment, we'll create a personalized care plan that includes wound treatment, dressing recommendations, follow-up schedule, and any referrals to other specialists we believe will help your healing.

Ongoing care

We track your wound's progress at every visit, adjusting the plan as your wound evolves. Between visits, you can reach our team by phone with questions — we're here to support you throughout your healing journey.

Self-Care

Home wound care tips

Good wound care between appointments makes a real difference. Here are our top tips for caring for your wound at home.

Keep it clean & moist

A moist wound environment heals faster. Follow your dressing instructions carefully — don't let the wound dry out, but also prevent it from becoming overly wet.

Change dressings as directed

Use only the products your clinician recommended. Dressing changes should be done with clean hands. Call us if your dressing runs out before your next visit.

Watch for warning signs

Increased redness, swelling, warmth, bad odor, green or yellow drainage, or fever may indicate infection. Contact us promptly if you notice these signs.

Nutrition matters

Wound healing requires protein, vitamin C, zinc, and adequate hydration. Talk to your care team about your diet — good nutrition dramatically improves healing speed.

Protect from pressure

Avoid prolonged pressure on wound areas. Use cushions, specialized footwear, or positioning devices as recommended. Pressure prevents healing.

Quit smoking if you can

Smoking significantly impairs wound healing by reducing blood flow and oxygen delivery. Your care team can connect you with cessation resources.
